The Josh Hanson Trust (TJHT) strongly welcomes the government’s recent announcement to increase the amount of time that victims have to appeal unduly lenient sentences from 28 days to six months.
“This is a massive step forward for victims,” said Tracey Hanson of TJHT(pictured centre). “After seven years of relentless campaigning, this is a significant and long-awaited victory for victims’ rights. This campaign has been one of our key aims and we are proud of this change, which is a major recognition of our work on behalf of victims.
“These changes will ensure that families are no longer left in the dark or rushed through a traumatising process during the most painful moments of their lives, as we were after Josh’s murder trial.”
Following the announcement, Victims’ Commissioner, Clare Waxman, (pictured left) posted: “This change has been driven by the tireless work of campaigners like Tracey Hanson of The Josh Hanson Trust, whose determination and commitment have been instrumental in securing this vital reform. Her courage will help ensure others do not face the same barriers when seeking justice.”
Blake Stephenson MP, (pictured right), added: “I am honoured to have been able to work closely with Tracey, raising her campaign directly with ministers and advocating meaningful reform in Parliament. The reforms are a fitting testament to the memory of Josh Hanson and to the tireless commitment of Tracey and all who have stood with TJHT.”
